Winged Beans or Goa Beans

Also called betel beans or dragon beans

The winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus) is an Asian bean variety that gets its name from the small, serrated wings on its pods. Similar to snake beans, winged beans can be eaten raw. In addition to the pods, the leaves, roots, and flowers of the winged bean are also edible.

These beans are also known as “Goa beans,” “Betel beans,” “Dragon beans,” or “Four-angled beans.” In Thailand, the winged or Goa beans are called “Thua Phu” ( ถั่วพู ). In Vietnam, they are known as “Đậu Rồng” and in Laos, they are also called “Thua Phu” (ຖົ່ວພູ).

You can find winged beans packaged in the fresh section of well-stocked Asian supermarkets. The length and thickness of the winged beans can vary considerably.
