About me and my blog

Who is “Der Reiskoch” and what does that mean?

Who is “Der Reiskoch”?

“Der Reiskoch” or - translated into english - “The Rice Cook” that is me, Jens Ihrig. I was born in the late 1970s and have lived in Karlsruhe since 2003 before moving to Freiburg in August 2021. I discovered my love for cooking at a young age and the love for Asian cuisines during a three-month trip through Southeast Asia after college in 2002.

Since that first visit to Asia I have been to those beautiful corners of the world more than ten times, each time falling deeper in love with Thailand, its neighbors and their cuisines.

The “Yam Woon Sen” is a Thai glass noodle salad and one of my favorite Thai dishes. Ot was therefore predestined to be the namesake ot the first version of my blog called “foodie.yamwoonsen.de”.

In December 2020, however, I decided to start to blog under the name “The Rice Cook”. The Thai salad in the name just left a lot of people baffled and others concluded this was a Thai-only blog.

Even though Thai cuisine will certainly continue to have by far the largest share of content, I would like to use the new name to include the neighboring Asian countries more, where rice is also the basis of every meal.

But there will always be a place in my kitchen and on my blog for delicious recipes from all around the world.
